WHAT IS HYDROMORPHONE or Dilaudid USED FOR?
Hydromorphone is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Hydromorphone is an opioid (narcotic) pain reliever. It acts on certain centers in the brain to give you pain relief.
DILAUDID INJECTION is available as a sterile, aqueous solution in clear and colorless pre-filled syringes for slow intravenous, subcutaneous, or intramuscular administration. Each 1 mL pre-filled syringe contains 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg, or 4 mg of hydromorphone hydrochloride.
DILAUDID-HP INJECTION is available as a sterile, aqueous solution in clear pre-filled syringes with a dark grey plunger rod, for slow intravenous, subcutaneous, or intramuscular administration. Each pre-filled syringe contains 10 mg/mL of hydromorphone hydrochloride.
The chemical name of DILAUDID is 4,5α-epoxy-3-hydroxy-17-methylmorphinan-6-one hydrochloride. The molecular weight is 321.80. Its molecular formula is C17H19NO3•HCl, and it has the following chemical structure:
Patients considered opioid tolerant are those who are taking for one week or longer,around-the-clock medicine consisting of at least 60 mg oral morphine per day, or at least 25 mcg transdermal fentanyl per hour, or at least 30 mg oral oxycodone per day, or at least 8 g oral hydromorphone per day, or at least 25 mg oral oxymorphone per day, or at least 60 mg oral hydrocodone per day, or an equianalgesic dose of another opioid for one week or longer. Patients must remain on around-the-clock opioids while administering DILAUDID-HP.

Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor. You may take this drug with or without food. If you have nausea, it may help to take this drug with food. Ask your doctor
